Refuge – the charity that opened the world’s first safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence in 1971 – launches a management training and development programme with Impellus.

Refuge is the country’s largest provider of specialist domestic violence services, supporting an average of 3,300 women and children on any given day. The number of services the charity runs grows year to year – and as such its staff and management base has also grown.

To date the majority of Refuge’s training has been undertaken in house. However, thanks to match funding and the charitable terms provided by Impellus, Refuge is able to embark on a new programme of accredited management and development training.

Refuge have embarked on an organisational management and leadership initiative with Impellus

How the Management Development helps meet the Mission

Across the country Refuge provides a range of top quality specialist domestic violence and violence against women and girls services. To ensure the continued success of the organisation and the services it delivers, Refuge recognises the need to invest in the development of its managers.

Delivering accredited training consistently across the country: Refuge plans to deliver service-specific training in-house and maximise Impellus’ courses to help managers build and develop core management skills.

As Refuge managers undertake the Impellus programme of training, they will work towards achieving an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Award.

Refuge chose Impellus to deliver the training and development for four main reasons:

• The ability for Managers to gain an ILM qualification in parallel with attending management training
• Flexible learning opportunities for Managers
• Opportunity to attend Impellus training courses around the UK, which supports Refuge’s multi location service base
• Opportunity to meet and learn alongside other Managers from other organisations to cross fertilise experience and ideas

Commenting after the launch of the programme at Refuge’s head office in London, Jon Dean of Impellus said, “Refuge provides life-saving and life-changing services to women and children across the country. The services Refuge provides are gold–standard; as such Refuge would like to ensure gold-standard training to its employees.

We are delighted to be working with Refuge to extend its established programme of accredited training and develop further the training of its management team”.

Kim Chudley, Head of HR for Refuge comments: “We have 45 managers working for Refuge, all of whom are eager and ready to learn and develop so that they can enhance the delivery of the vital services the charity runs. Women and children who experience domestic and gender based violence require intensive, specialist support which is why Refuge is committed to ensuring all of its staff are trained to the highest possible standard. We look forward to blending our high quality training with Impellus – together we will grow and develop the skills and competencies of Refuge’s experienced team of managers.”
